RANDWICK PREVIEW with Chris Scholtz – June 8

TRACK: Heavy 9 (8am Friday); RAIL: True

Selections and best bets from Chris Scholtz for the Randwick meeting on June 8 plus Trial Watch and Blackbook Reports.

Best Bets

RACE 5: (8) BOOTSCOOTER – Value is the name of a game on a huge program with capacity fields on a heavy track. This genuine mare is well placed to improve sharply in this easier class after her eye catching first-up effort in the G3 Dark Jewel (1400m) at the Scone carnival. Boasts an impressive record on affected tracks and will be fitter for the step up to a more suitable distance.

RACE 10: (5) GREBENI – Good trial since a forgive effort when second up at Newcastle. Unbeaten in two starts over this course and distance and has the weights in his favour meeting Waterford 3kg better from their recent clash at Rosehill when he was first-up and produced excellent closing splits. Fitter now and is the one who makes the most appeal at his early price.

RACE 11: (10) STARMAN – He’s been tabbed as a non-winner but if he’s ever going to end his run of minor placings this is it. He’s been second or third in six of his last seven starts in this class with nothing less than 58kg but this time he will benefit from an allowance that sees him down 2kg from his last start second over this course and distance. Has hard race fitness behind him and must be favoured by the conditions bewing in the money in six of his seven starts on soft and heavy tracks.

TRIAL POINTERS

RANDWICK May 31: Nice placings in open heats from some well performed runners including ASTERO and the import ELIYASS, a Listed winner in France with bright prospects.

ROSEHILL May 24: Bjorn Baker won a 2YO heat over 900m with first time runner STARDEEL (54.78; 35.47). He showed surprising pace for a Dundeel colt having his first trial. The Hawkes-trained GITALONG finished second in his 3YO heat over 900m run in good time for the session (54.49; 35.31). Led and worked to the line under no pressure. BACCHANALIA won another trial for his new trainer Richard Litt, posting the fastest in the three heats over 1030m (62.48; 35.01). He ran along in the lead and came under a ride with the runner-up GREBENI the one that impressed with his strong work over the last 100m.

ROSEHILL May 17STEP ASIDE is set for a good campaign after strong work to win his 900m heat with plenty in reserve (56.83; 35.87). Travelled wide before closing on the lead and doing it easily under a good hold. The fastest 900m heat (54.45; 34.93) featured nice work from the experienced winner GITALONG.

RANDWICK May 16: A Snowden-trained heat winner to make an impression was the smart mare ALICIA ROMA. She has missed a place only three times in 13 starts and her easy win in her 737m heat (43.85; 33.61) indicates she is ready to rebound from a Victorian campaign late last year.

WARWICK FARM May 7:  The Snowden-trained VINNIRO, a gelding by I Am Invincible, showed he had improved since his two spring starts with a dominant win in the fastest of the three 2YO heats over 1045m (63.98; 35.71).

WARWICK FARM April 26: Nice conditioning trial from BACCHANALIA with a strong win in his 801m heat (47.48; 33.50) in his first trial for his new trainer Richard Litt. I’m not a fan of polytrack trials but it there was plenty to like about the way the heat winner JAMBALAYA went about his business.

RECENT TRIAL WATCH WINNERS: Broadsiding; Yukan Rose; Equipage; Commemorative; Kerguelen; How Dare You; Bat Out Of Hell; Setombe; Unleeshing; Navy Blood; Pink Baroque; Be Real; Glenbower; Clean Energy; Emirate; Zoe’s Promise; Contemporary; Rise Of The Masses; Parisal; Graceful Artist; Lizzie’s Gem; Spring Lee; Waterford; Highlights; Ikasara; Redbreast
