The Australian Cup 2023 is set to be one of the most exciting races of the Melbourne Autumn Carnival! With a prize money of $3,000,000 and a field of top horses, this Group One race over 2000m at Flemington Racecourse is not to be missed.
The Australian Cup has a rich history dating back to 1863 and has been won by many quality thoroughbreds, including two of the last ten winners – Shocking and Fiorente – who have also tasted success in the Melbourne Cup. Many of the horses in this year’s race will have come through the Peter Young Stakes or the CF Orr Stakes.
The final field and barriers have been set and Marocchino, Right You Are, and Numerian are expected to lead the pack. Smokin’ Romans has the barrier to be in the top five or six, while Pounding may be sent forward from the start.
Cascadian (1) is a strong contender for the win with a solid All-Star Mile 2nd as the right lead-up race for this. Virtuous Circle (16) could be a dark horse with a weight advantage, and Right You Are (9) is in excellent form under the training of Maher and Eustace. Hezashocka (10) is worth keeping an eye on, despite a disappointing run in the G2 Blamey Stakes, as he had a strong trial leading up to the race.
